This sensor acts as a safety feature by monitoring the exhaust gas temperature, if the reading gets too high the heater will shut down to protect itself. This reading can be affected by a few different factors, for example: Too many bends in the exhaust will restrict the hot gases from escaping, carbon build up in the heat exchanger can make the sensor dirty or a possible fault with the sensor.
